‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’ – John 1 vs 1 {KJV}
- In the beginning was the Word
Question: What word? The verse says that in the beginning was the Word, and that term ‘word’ used in that verse was translated from the Greek word ‘logos’, which means ‘something said’. So what was that thing said in the beginning, that was with God, that was God? Let’s see:
‘Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;’ – Titus 1 vs 1 – 2 {King James Version}
- Eternal Life which God promised before the world began
Again, we see that God promised eternal life before the world began. Now, when we say that God promised eternal life before the world began, understand that what that means is that God had the plan to save man even before He created man. Because, before God created man, there was no man, so He couldn’t have promised any man eternal life in the literal usage of the word ‘promise’. You see… So, God knowing that He would create man, and also, He knowing that man would fall, He drafted out a plan to save man before He created man. This is what Apostle Paul is communicating in the verse above.
So, God promised or God had a plan to give eternal life to man, before the world began. Okay. Now see verse 3:
‘But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour…’ – Titus 1 vs 3 {KJV}
- But hath in due times manifested His word
Did you see that? He says that in due times, God manifested His word. Question: What word did God manifest? His promise! What promise? His promise to give man eternal life which He made before the world began. You see… So ‘Word’ as used in John 1 vs 1 above means God’s promise of eternal life before the world began, or God’s plan to save man before He created man. Think about it for a minute, and continue reading.
So with this understanding, let’s see John 1 vs 1 again, and then let’s rephrase it with this understanding and arrive at the actual revelation John was communicating in that verse:
‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’ – John 1 vs 1 {KJV}
Now let’s rephrase it:
‘In the beginning God promised eternal life, and the promise was with God, and the promise was God.’ – John 1 vs 1 {KJV}
Or
‘In the beginning God had a plan to save man, and the plan was with God, and the plan was God.’ – John 1 vs 1 {KJV}
You see that… Going to the verse 14, we are told that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Let’s see:
‘And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.’ – John 1 vs 14 {KJV}
- And the Word was made flesh
God made His plan to save man flesh! The promise or plan of eternal life which God had before the world began was made flesh. In other words, God made eternal life flesh; God made eternal life a human being. Think on that. So, who is Jesus? Jesus is eternal life! Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s promise of eternal life made flesh! Who is Jesus? Jesus is eternal life bodily! Who is Jesus? Jesus is the bodily manifestation of God’s promise of eternal life before the world began! Who is Jesus? Jesus is the bodily manifestation of God’s plan to save man! Who is Jesus? Jesus is eternal life. Hallelujah! Hence you will hear Jesus say:
‘For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself…’ – John 5 vs 26 {KJV}
You see…
‘Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.’ – John 5 vs 39 – 40 {King James Version}
‘And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.’ – John 6 vs 40 {KJV}
‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’ – John 3 vs 16 {KJV}
‘The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.’ – John 10 vs 10 {KJV}
‘Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live…’ – John 11 vs 25 {KJV}
You see… Jesus is the Word made flesh—Eternal life promised made a human being! – Think on this. So therefore, we know who Jesus is: He is Eternal Life which God promised before the world began.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
